Exchange foreign driving licence (EU and EEA) for Portuguese one

Driving licences issued by countries belonging to the European Union and the European Economic Area (EEA - Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) are valid in Portugal until the end of the validity period stated on the driving licence.

Drivers who reside in Portugal must inform the IMT Regional or District Service of their area of residence within 60 days.

However, if you are an EU citizen living in Portugal, you are no longer obliged to exchange your licence within 2 years, unless your licence is damaged or lost.

If you wish to exchange your licence, here are the main steps:

Documents

- Original valid and definitive driving license ( IMT will keep the original )

- Identification document and proof of authorization to reside in national territory;

- Fiscal Identification Number;

- Medical Certificate for drivers of all categories;

Fee: € 30

The request for the exchange of a foreign driving licence is done in 2 steps :

- the application must be made online at IMT online

- then the IMT will contact you to schedule an appointment in person (the driver), in a IMT counter in order to proceed to the capture of biometric data of the driver (signature and webcam photo) or biometric data of the citizen card.

The new driving licence is sent by registered post, to the address indicated by the driver when registering the exchange request.

Until he receives the new Portuguese driving licence, the driver will have a certificate valid for 6 months in order to drive.

In the case of a lifetime driving licence, after the driver has communicated his/her residence, a period of 2 years is fixed on the administrative document delivered to him/her (Registration of national residence of drivers with a community licence). After this period, you must exchange it.
